What Is a Community? The Definitive Guide

A community isn't a Discord server, a follower count, or a hashtag. It's something quieter and harder to fake. Here's what makes one real, and how to recognise yours when you find it.

The word "community" gets tossed around a lot. Every newsletter is one. Every Discord server is one. Every brand with a hashtag claims to have built one.

Most of those aren't communities in the way we define them here at Coliven.

So What Actually Is a Community?

A community is people who share something that matters to them, who actually talk to each other, and who keep showing up over time.

Three things have to be present:

  1. Connection. People talk to each other, not just to the leader or the feed.
  2. Continuity. They keep coming back. The thing has a memory.
  3. Shared meaning. They feel like part of the same "we."

Take any of those away and you have something else. An audience. A crowd. A network. They serve different purpose and are useful in different context.

Why The Difference Matters

Communities are sturdy. Audiences are not.

A community can lose its founder, its platform, even its original purpose, and still keep going. The people are the thing. They carry it.

An audience disappears the moment the content stops. The connection was always to one person, never sideways between members. Pull the centre out and there's nothing holding it together.

If people are participating but never claim the group as part of who they are, the identity isn't there yet.

2. Member-to-Member Interaction

Do members talk to each other, or only to the organiser?

This one matters more than the others. Try a thought experiment: if the founder went quiet for a week, would anyone keep talking? In a real community, yes, immediately. In an audience, the room goes silent.

Watch where the messages flow. If everything routes through one account, you don't have a community. You have a stage with people watching.

3. Sense of Belonging

Do members actually feel something? The "I belong here" feeling.

You can often tell from the language, for example people in real communities use words like "home," "found my people". They come back even when there's nothing to gain. The connection itself is the point.

If people show up only when they need something and disappear once they have it, the belonging isn't there.

4. Continuity Over Time

Does the group have a past and a future?

Real communities have history. Inside jokes. Stories that get retold. Traditions, anniversaries, people who've been there since the beginning. Members talk about what's coming next, not just what's happening now.

If activity spikes around launches and dies in between, the continuity is missing.

5. Mutual Contribution

Do members give to each other, or just consume?

When someone asks a question, who answers? In a real community, other members do, before the moderator even sees it. People help each other. They share what they've learned. The energy goes in lots of directions, not just from one source out to many.

If the same handful of people produce everything and everyone else just watches, that's not a community. That's a publication with a comment section.

6. Shared Norms and Culture

Is there a way things are done here?

Real communities have a feel to them. A tone, a rhythm, a set of unspoken rules that new people pick up by hanging around. When someone breaks the culture, other members nudge them gently, not because they're enforcing rules but because they care about the place.

If every interaction starts from zero, with no shared sense of how things work, the culture hasn't formed.

7. Interdependence

Do members actually need each other?

In strong communities, people lean on each other. For knowledge, advice, encouragement, sometimes practical help. They collaborate. They refer each other to opportunities outside the group. The relationships have weight.

If you could pull any one person out and nobody would notice, the dependency isn't there.

8. Self-Organisation

Does stuff happen on its own?

Members of real communities start things. They open channels, plan meetups, take on small roles, build sub-groups around things they care about. The group lives beyond what the founders imagined.

If nothing happens unless an admin makes it happen, the community is leaning entirely on its leadership. That's fragile.

What your score means:

  • 0 to 6. Not a community. Probably an audience, a crowd, or a group with a community-shaped name.
  • 7 to 11. Something is forming. The bones are there. Worth investing in if you're building, worth giving time to if you've joined.
  • 12 to 16. A real community. People are connected, the group has a life of its own, and it'll survive things going wrong.

If you remember one thing from this whole guide, remember number two: member-to-member interaction. A group with zero on that dimension cannot be a community, no matter how high it scores on everything else. Real communities are webs, not broadcasts.

Most social media "communities" are audiences. Most professional "communities" are networks. Most company "communities" are groups. The word gets used because it sounds warm. The thing it describes is usually something colder.

This isn't a criticism. Audiences, networks, and groups are useful. They serve real purposes. The trouble is calling them communities when they aren't, because then you build for the wrong thing and wonder why it doesn't feel right.

How To Use This Framework

If you're looking for a community to join. Don't trust the marketing. Watch the place for a week before joining anything serious. Look for the diagnostic signal: are members talking to each other, or only to the organiser? Anything scoring under 8 won't give you a sense of belonging, no matter how good the mission statement sounds.

If you're building a community. Most groups start as audiences and stay there because the founder won't get out of the way. The fastest way to grow a community is to make it less about you. Introduce members to each other. Create reasons for them to collaborate. Then go quiet and let them build.

If you're assessing an intentional community. Ecovillages, communes, co-housing projects all tend to score high on continuity and interdependence because daily life forces it. Where they often struggle is self-organisation, especially when a charismatic founder is still in the middle of every decision. The question to ask: what happens when the founder leaves the room?

Everything else is context. Two people with real connection, consistent presence, and a shared sense of meaning are more of a community than ten thousand followers staring at the same account.
